Dive Site Spotlight - Anemone Thila
This week the full team from AQUA Dive & Water Sports, Atoll Marine Centre and Atoll Volunteers went on a very special fun dive to Anemone Thila, a beautiful Marine Protected Area here in Lhaviyani.
Being a Thila, which means means deep pinnacle in Dhivehi, this site sits near the middle of the atoll and protrudes out of the sea floor. It is rich in sea anemones (Maagandu) of many species as well as hard and soft corals and populated with Clark’s Anemonefish (Maagandumas) along with other anemonefish species, lionfish, morays, shrimps and swarms of glassfish.
It is clear why this pinnacle has been listed under category 6 Habitat/Species Managed area “These are protected areas aiming to protect particular species or habitats and through its management. These areas aim to maintain, conserve and restore species and habitats.” As the amount of biodiversity at this small site are outstanding.
We look forward to visiting Anemone Thila with our team, partners, volunteers and guests for years to come.
