February Dive Against Debris Counts
This February we conducted four PADI Dive Against Debris events, cleaning the ~500m² reef patch that we spotted 14 clean up dives ago.
On February 7th our team removed 31.7kg of plastic and other debris from our reef, followed by 42kg on February 14th, 36.8kg on February 22nd and 28.9kg of February 28th. - a total of 139.4kg totalling 2209 of trash removed, sorted, surveyed and properly disposed off.
The Maldives has a significant trash problem due to its limited land space. However, most of the debris we remove isn’t ‘new’, but imbedded in layers into the sandy areas surrounding coral reef. Having removed over 530kg so far, we are seeing a visable difference on this reef patch but there is still more to do.
This work would be impossible without the help of all our incredible volunteers. If you would like to join us for our next clean up event please get in touch.
