Ghost Nets
This morning a ghost net was spotted by the harbour in Naifaru.
Our team, including our fantastic boat captain, all of the incredible volunteers, and amazing locals, worked tirelessly to remove it from the ocean and bring it safely ashore.
The net had to be checked for entangled animals and then carefully removed from the rocks to ensure no damage was caused to the harbour wall and no pieces of net were left behind, before being moved to the beach where it was separated into pieces and slowly bought ashore.
Every year ghost gear is found responsible for trapping and killing a significant number of marine animals as well as damaging reefs and shorelines.
Thankfully there were no animals caught in this net and we were able to successfully remove it, stopping it from causing any further damage.
The net will now be further taken apart with the floats attached being used in our coral garden, the thinner ropes used for ghost net bracelets and anything else reusable being saved before the remainder is properly disposed.
A huge thank you to everyone that helped out today. The team work, determination and dedication shown was phenomenal.
