May Dive Against Debris Counts
The continuous stormy weather of the Maldives Wet Season meant we only ran two Dive Against Debris events in May but our amazing team still managed to remove 41.9kg of trash from our house reef over these dives.
On May 23rd we were joined by Tegan, the volunteer coordinator at Atoll Volunteers, Kaiti, a Marine Biologist at Atoll Marine Centre and Anum who is a Marine Intern at AMC and, working together, we removed 154 items weighing 21.3kg from a small reef patch on the east side of our house reef. Then, on May 30th our Coral Restoration Volunteer Sauvane joined us and along with AMC’s Marine Biologist Iara and Tegan we removed another 273 items weighing 20.6kg from our central reef patch.
We are happy to report that the amount we are removing with each dive is getting smaller, simply because there is less trash left. The reef patch that made us start this mission is looking healthier with new coral recruits and more abundant fish too.
The total trash we removed from our ocean in May was 41.9kg making our total for the 21 events we have ran so far 740.7kg!
